Overview

Home to Georgetown University, Washington Harbor, the Old Stone House, and the Cheasapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal among many points of interest, the neighborhood of Georgetown was once a separate city that predated the city of Washington and the District of Columbia. It is known for its historic residential neighborhoods, trendy shopping and highly-rated restaurants along M St. and Wisconsin, and scenic walks along the Potomac River.

Georgetown is bordered on the North by Burleith and Glover Park, the Potomac River to the South, Georgetown main campus to the West, and Rock Creek Pkwy to the East.

The smaller neighborhoods of Palisades, Colony Hill, Foxhall, and Burleith are oftentimes included in the larger neighborhood of Georgetown. These areas are mostly high-end residential areas along the Potomac and to the Northwest of Georgetown University.

People going to school at Georgetown University or The George Washington University, working in one of the many embassies and consulate offices, or working in Dupont Circle or downtown often consider residing in the Georgetown neighborhood.

Housing

Whether a student attending Georgetown, a young professional looking for a first apartment, or an executive working for one of the many businesses, embassies, non-profits, or NGOs located in Georgetown, there are many housing options and some general expectation of which you should be aware.

Georgetown is a national registered historical neighborhood that is regulated by the neighborhood advisory commission that controls many aspects of living including building renovations, construction, and housing.

Potential renters should expect smaller rental units and condos due to the historic buildings and limited available renovations and upgrades. Because Georgetown prides itself as a more exclusive and secluded neighborhood that is not linked by underground Metro, the area commands a premium on rates and prices.

Renters can expect starting rates of $1300-$1500 for studios/efficiencies, depending on amenities and the age of the building. Housing very close to campus consists primarily of converted residential houses. Renters can expect an even higher premium on these units.

Below are several featured buildings in this neighborhood for consideration. Be sure to check with each apartments' property management company for more information, availability, and current prices. And don’t be afraid to contact them! Most renters need to give 30-60 days moving notice. If you know you’re moving in the next few months, have them keep track of apartments coming available for you.
