Colombia Heights/Mount Pleasant

Overview

Columbia Heights and its smaller enclaves of Mt. Pleasant, Park View, and Pleasant Plains have a rich history of residential life throughout the constant developing and changing DC landscape. Once home to the very rich and powerful of DC, the area fell into economic decline following the race riots of the late 1960's. Recent renovation projects have resurrected the area and a thriving Howard University and the students attending there have brought the neighborhoods back into focus.

A new mixed-use residential and commercial complex just opened two years ago at the Columbia Heights Metro Station and brought DC its first Best Buy and Target. Several apartments and condos have been constructed and the surviving buildings of the area have all been renovated.

The neighborhoods are bordered by Spring Road to the North, Florida Ave. to the South, Howard University and Old Soldiers Home to the East, and Rock Creek Park and the neighborhood of Adams Morgan to the West.

Housing

Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant and its enclaves are highly residential areas. These neighborhoods have become hugely popular as renovation and new construction has brought high-end units to the area. A favorite among Howard University Students, Columbia Heights and Pleasant Plains are two popular neighborhoods in which to live while attending the University.

Renters can expect to find a wide range of prices from economical $800 units aimed at student housing to brand new luxury apartment homes for as much as $2000 for a one bedroom. Prices tend to escalate rapidly the closer the complex is to the metro station and new retail stores.
