Overview

Chevy Chase and the smaller adjacent enclaves of Tenleytown and Friendship Heights are home to many DC residential neighborhoods as well as new commercial development areas such as the shopping plaza at the intersection of Western Ave. and another at Wisconsin Ave. and Albemarle and Wisconsin Ave. Chevy Chase is bordered by Rock Creek Park to the North and East, Western Ave. to the West, and the neighborhoods of American University Park and Cleveland Park to the South. Both Chevy Chase and Friendship Heights spill over into Maryland, beyond DC's western border at Western Ave.

The smaller neighborhood of Friendship Heights is often included within the consideration of Chevy Chase. It is has many residential streets as well as the corporate headquarters for GEICO Insurance Company and the Ritz Carlton.

Tenleytown is a small triangular enclave named after a local tavern owner, John Tennally, back in the late seventeen hundreds. Of historical importance, Tenleytown was also the location of Fort Reno, one of the forts built to protect the city during the American Civil War.

Students attending school at nearby American University as well as professionals working in one the many businesses along the commercial area of Connecticut Ave often consider residing in Chevy Chase and its surrounding residential enclaves.

Housing

Whether a student attending American University or a professional looking for a new apartment, there are many housing options and some general expectation of which you should be aware.

Chevy Chase is a middle-class residential area of DC. Many of its neighborhoods consist of single family homes. Most apartments are found along the commercial corridor of Connecticut Ave. which cuts through the area and divides Chevy Chase with its smaller enclaves of Tenleytown and Friendship Heights.

Renters can expect starting rates of $1300-$1500 for studios/efficiencies, depending on amenities and the age of the building. Some of the newer apartment complexes can go for much higher prices, depending on their amenities and distance from the metro stations.

And don’t be afraid to contact them! Most renters need to give 30-60 days moving notice. Transportation

The underground Metro serves the area on the Red line at the Tenleytown/AU and Friendship Heights metro stations located on the Southwest border of Chevy Chase. A number of Metro bus lines also serve the area along Connecticut Ave.
