Overview

The Brentwood neighborhood and the smaller enclaves that surround it (Eckington, Edgewood, Fort Lincoln, Gateway, Ivy City, and Langdon) are home to Trinity University and Gallaudet University. Named after a historic Mansion built in the early 1800's on a huge estate, the area has gone through many transformations including the site of a WWI Army staging ground, land being donated to Gallaudet University, a lumber yard, and the current site of many city and government offices as well as a train maintenance facility for WMATA.

The majority of Brentwood is comprised of residential housing, along with some industrial development and office buildings closer towards Downtown. Ivy City is the exception and is known for its Amtrak and WMATA rail facility maintenance yards. Many students attending Gallaudet and Trinity Universities reside in the area. The area is bounded by Eastern Ave to the Northeast, Catholic University and Brookland Neighborhood to the North, New York Ave. to the South, and Shaw Neighborhood to the West.
